Walking through the Crab Market which is filled with over 20 different restaurants specializing in crabs of all kinds, countless food stalls and women catching and cooking the crab along the shore line, you cant help but be captured by it all.
If you find that Kep town itself is not too busy, then it is probably because everyone is in the Kep Market or sitting along the waterfront eating bags of fresh caught crab. The market is a short Tuk Tuk from anywhere is Town, mostly costing around $2.00, and by far one of my favourite stops in Cambodia.
We had gone down to the market on a few different nights but our favourite restaurant was Kimly. Set near the end of the row of wooden waterfront shacks and possibly one of the most famous on the strip, Kimly Seafood Restaurant serves up delicious crab and seafood delights. Just make sure when you are picking out the crab that you are getting it weighed and priced at the front so there are no surpasses on the bill. This goes for all the crab places in the market.
If you are not in the mood for Crab for some crazy reason I can not even think of because lets face it, its always a good time for Crab, then the countless Bbq stands sell everything from roasted chicken, fresh caught whole roasted fish and papaya salads.
Or, you can be a little more adventurous and try out a local dish. I am not entirely sure what this was but it looked to me like a cold, very spicy mussel Yakisoba.
Most of the restaurants around the market open early and stay open late and you will not be disappointed by the quality of the food. Sitting in a restaurant overlooking the water, watching the sun go down, you might have the thought “I don’t think it can get much better than this” and then, your beautiful plate of Crab arrives and a perhaps a tiny tear is shed in Joy. You are in Cambodia, sitting at a seaside town enjoying the sunset and fresh caught crab. If that doesn’t sound like a perfect vacation then I don’t know what is.
