This is my new favourite platter of all times
It has everything yes everything! Sweet, Spicy, Salty, Earthy and they all come together in these wonderful crispy bites thanks to the awesome toasted bread it’s all topped on
Smoked Mackerel. Lets talk about this lovely treat for a second and how I got introduced to it. I have not had smoked Mackerel many time in my life. In fact, until a few months ago never even knew what it tasted. Sure, there was the odd time in the store that I had glanced at it and wondered if I should cook with it or not but really didn’t know what to do with it
But then, one day I decided to buy it and figure it out from there. Why Not?
There was actually a very specific reason why. Around November while in our apartment in Bonaire we had had a few friends visit us by boat. And if we go back even further lets talk about how I met them
So here I am in Dominica on our boat and Rob had gone away a few days for business. In the morning I am about to take Sadie for her morning walk when a women comes up to our boat. It is not something that happens very regularly so there was somewhat of a confusion. After talking she ends up inviting me to her wedding party on the beach. Said she is inviting all the boaters and doing a pot luck dinner. What an amazing idea. Anyways kept in touch and ended up meeting her here in Bonaire with another couple we had met at the wedding
All four of them were coming over for dinner and I wanted to just make a tapas style dinner where we could all stand around and talk but pick at things on the table. They were all vegetarians but they did eat fish. So I was coming up with a menu and while in the store I noticed this beautiful smoked mackerel. Again, I had never cooked with it before but I figured that I could make it into some sort of a dip and indeed that is exactly what I did
Let me tell you this was
- Super Delicious
- Creamy
- Savoury
- Smokey
I can honestly say that I could not stop eating it and I think that the pickled onions on top was the perfect side kick
The next time that I made this dish I decided to make a whole platter out of it and it was even better than the first time. Having the counter balance to the salty dip with the sweet and spicy and pickled sides is amazing. And I don’t know about you but there is something about an amazing toasted pieced of artisan bread that makes everything that much better
Do you love dips because I for one do. Sometimes you have to think beyond salsa and chips. I bought a book called “Dips” and at the beginning the author wrote something like “To my husband who sometimes would only eat dip for dinner, Thank you ” and I thought to myself yup, I could see my self doing the same thing

I was really surprised how good this is. All our crazy European friends love there mackerel but it’s not common place in Vancouver do to SALMON (the best fish ever).
This is defineately worth a try and don’t forget the wine.
Great presentation and photos. Keep up the great work!
